Volunteering

Running a project like Springvale Community Garden/Grow Penistone needs people to provide lots of different skills. There is literally a job for everyone here in the garden from sowing seeds to harvesting crops, mowing grass and weeding vegetable beds to heavier work such as clearing new spaces and building maintenance. Volunteering can be a very positive experience and you can expect a warm welcome from all at Springvale. You don’t need to commit hours and hours of your time; an hour or two here and there can be beneficial to all.  Our regular volunteer days are currently Wednesday and Saturday.

We are currently seeking willing volunteers to help us in the following roles:

Sales helper x 4

With an increasing amount of produce and plants being grown at Springvale this is an important and interesting role involving harvesting, bagging, labelling, running a shop and liaising with other local outlets such as the Arthouse Cafe and Country Markets.

General helper (heavy duties )

This role involves helping to move heavy items around the site. We have to move everything by hand as there is no vehicular access directly to site. This role makes for a good workout!

Garden planner

This is a role for an experienced gardener who would enjoy assisting the project manager to plan what fruit and veg we are going to plant… when, where, and in what bed.  We aim to grow using organic and permaculture techniques so ideally this role would be taken up by someone who is enthusiastic about these approaches to growing.

Plumber

We often have small plumbing jobs to do around the site, and would love to find a volunteer with plumbing skills.

Painter and decorator

There are several buildings in desperate need of a fresh lick-of-paint at Springvale.

Administrator

This role would  involve taking and typing meeting minutes – just one Thursday a month at the moment; and helping to write and distribute a short newsletter.

And by the way roles are not set in stone and we hope that all volunteers will help each other with different jobs and learn new skills along the way.

Please use the contact page to email or phone for further details of these opportunities.
